Dr. Richard Fermelia, MD, FACS, FAMBS: ASMBS Center of Excellence Surgeon |

WHY DOES THE COE PROGRAM EXIST?
- The results of Weight Loss surgery for morbid obesity have been variable.
- There is clinical evidence that the most experienced and best-run bariatric surgery programs have by far the lowest rates of complications.
- The leadership of the ASMBS identified the need to recognize the bariatric centers that perform well.
- The ASMBS COE program was created to recognize bariatric surgeons and bariatric centers that perform well: making it possible for patients to clearly identify centers of high quality and safety.
HOW DID THE SURGEONS AND THE WEIGHT LOSS CENTER GET THE DESIGNATION?
- CRMC and the surgeons were held to the highest standards in the industry.
- CRMC and Drs Fermelia underwent an intensive detailed application and site inspection during which all aspects of the bariatric surgery program were reviewed by experts in bariatric surgery.
- Program processes were closely examined, from preoperative preparation, through surgery, and short / long term follow-up.
- We have been and continue to provide data to a shared national database in bariatric surgery called BOLD (Bariatric Outcomes Longitudinal Database™).
